My life’s work as a doctor is based on one idea my parents taught me long ago -- that helping others is our highest calling. I see how so many patients struggle to afford care, and how so many Americans put off medical care because they fear they won’t be able to afford it. That’s why I made it a rule in my hospital practice -- if a patient doesn't have insurance, we don't seek payment. And I've spent a great deal of time volunteering at a local free clinic.
I support a Medicare for All system, but first we need to protect the Affordable Care Act from Donald Trump’s attacks -- the law has helped millions of Californians and Americans get health care. There is still more work to do, and I support Medicare For All to ensure every American has health care coverage.
Health care is a human right, and that’s one of the reasons I’m running in this race.
I know firsthand the importance of a quality education – the difference an American education can make.
I’ll fight hard to invest in our public schools because every child deserves a fair shot at success. With the help of my friends, I started an after school tutoring pilot program in El Monte. I’ve also served on the board of the ELAC foundation and helped build a fund for scholarships for needy children.
California is also home to the best colleges and universities in the country, but the huge cost of higher education is hurting our families and our economy. No child should be prevented from attending college because they can’t afford it, and no family should be forced to take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans to be able to send their child to college. I support establishing free tuition to state and community colleges, so students are not held back by their family’s income bracket.
As a Muslim immigrant from this great blue state of CA, I’m a triple threat to Donald Trump. And I’m going to make him listen to the voices of all those people he is trying to silence.
My story is like so many Californians’. California has the largest number of immigrants of any state in this country. I’ll fight Donald Trump’s attacks on immigrants and stand up for all Californians – regardless of their immigration status -- and I’ll defend all of our communities against his discriminatory attacks.
I say President Trump has it all wrong – it’s time to get tough on hate. It’s time to fight hate and division, and instead build compassion and opportunity.
